January Spirit Day (changed to 1:00PM)

We invite our Bethune Academy families to attend the Spirit Day Celebration on Friday, January 25th at 1:00 PM in the afternoon.  Normally, Spirit Day celebrations are in the morning but there will be colder temperatures in the morning. The afternoon will be warmer, but children should dress for cool weather. Some students and staff members will be dressed as book characters for Literacy Week.

This is a special time to honor the students at Bethune Academy for their accomplishments. Thank you for your support.

What's up? The moon

Our Bethune students love science and there is a great science opportunity in January!

Sunday, January 20th will be a special day to observe the moon. There will be a full moon, super moon, and total lunar eclipse which will make the moon appear larger and have a red color close to midnight. The eclipse will begin at 11:41PM and peak a little after midnight. Some parents may choose to let their children stay up and watch since there is no school the next day.  If they are not able to stay up that late, they should still take this opportunity to learn about this eclipse online. Click: Don’t miss the spectacular super blood moon eclipse on January 20th.

Our 4th and 5th graders should take every opportunity to learn about our moon phases because it will help them learn important information for science class.

IMPORTANT UPDATE: Volunteer Application Fee

In order to volunteer and chaperone field trips, you must be an approved volunteer. We depend on our valuable school volunteers at Bethune Academy. Please apply now if you plan to attend any field trips or volunteer on campus.  Application: https://polkschoolsfl.com/getinvolved/

The price for Polk County Public Schools volunteer background checks was scheduled to increase from $25 to $40. However, the Polk County School Board has decided that the fee to cover volunteers’ background checks, as well as their badge and handbook, will remain $25 through the end of the calendar year.

Polk County Public Schools will be using more extensive volunteer background checks as part of our security measures to protect students and staff. The district will incur an additional charge for the statewide and national background checks.

Through the end of 2018, the cost to volunteers will remain $25. We are exploring other funding sources to help offset the cost of background screening for volunteers on an ongoing basis. More information will follow.
